Today I am linking up with Speech Room New’s monthly linky party to share my must have Behavior Management tools and resources! Like ALL SLP’s, I have lots of tools in my tool box for behavior management that I pull out when a behavior emergency may ensue. Every year, my caseload looks slightly different and I find that I use some resources more than others. You can check out my every day management system on my guest post over at Live Love Speech! I am really glad that Jenna is having this linky party because I am ready to switch it up for next year and needed ideas for my new system.
The theme this year in my speech room is a “beach” theme, so my whole room has an inviting “summer beach” feel to it. Over the summer, I made a Splish Splash Summer Themed Behavior pack to use along side with my theme. I use raffle tickets, my speechie clip chart, working for chart and much more with my students. This is the first year that I had a theme and it has been fun sticking with it! I did a DIY Decor Linky Party to give other SLP’s ideas for their speech rooms. The students do feel more ready to learn when they come into an organized and festive classroom. Check it out!!

Does this sound familiar to you? I have found myself using these not so helpful phrases with some of my wiggly, fidgety and off task kiddos. I was getting really annoyed having to remind 4th-5th graders MANY times per session to stay focused and get work completed that I realized these students needed to be shown and taught about WHOLE BODY LISTENING. Sometimes it is worth “sacrificing” valuable speech therapy learning time to set the tone for more successful therapy sessions in the future. I also went back and analyzed the type of lesson I planned to see where I could have helped enable my kiddos to stay engaged (it’s a two way street) both the educator and student have jobs to do in order to have optimal learning! I discovered this Whole Body Listening book from Social Thinking and read it to my groups in need of hearing and seeing this!
I also have this poster hanging in my room to reference when a student is not using one part of the whole body listening. I love it because I can show them the area that is missing rather than using one of those “nagging” phrases. The student then tells me what their body should be doing to demonstrate whole body listening. I always praise the kids when I see whole body listening and before an activity we review what WHOLE BODY LISTENING will look like during the story, worksheet, game, etc.
After we read the WHOLE BODY LISTENING book, I brought in some old Better Homes and Gardens magazines and had the students make a WHOLE BODY LISTENING collages. I have a very funny story about using magazines in the therapy room and will only say to make sure to check all the images in the magazine before using in a school setting. You can grab my collage template HERE! What are your behavior management tips and tricks? I am always looking for more things to add to my tool box!!
